Fred and Elizabeth Fountain contribute $10 million for New School of Performing Arts
Philanthropists Elizabeth and Fred Fountain have donated $10 million to establish a new school of performing arts at Dalhousie University. The school – the only one of its kind east of Montreal – will serve as a catalyst for the creative economy in Atlantic Canada benefitting the greater regional community.
This new school of performing arts builds on Dalhousie’s scholarly study in the arts, particularly in the now-combined departments of music, theatre and costume studies. Programs to be phased in include a high-profile visiting artists program, more robust scholarship offerings and expanded outreach and mentorship programming.
The search for the new school’s director is now underway, so students and the greater arts community can expect to see a number of enhanced activities beginning in the fall 2013.
This is the largest donation ever made by Elizabeth and Fred Fountain. It is part of Bold Ambitions: the Campaign for Dalhousie which concludes on May 16, 2013.
The university has also committed to much-needed renovations to the existing Dalhousie Arts Centre, so that the appropriate infrastructure is in place for its planned expansion.
"The arts play an important role in lending creativity and critical thinking to the more science-based disciplines. It’s our belief that the arts don’t get enough support and we want to change that." - Fred Fountain
"We all benefit from the arts. They bring such beauty to our lives and provide deep healing powers. This is not just about making a gift to Dalhousie, it’s much broader than that." - Elizabeth Fountain
"The gift is truly transformative and takes our excellence to the next level. It allows us to expand the scope of the performing arts and to play an even stronger leadership role in our city and region." - Tom Traves, President, Dalhousie University
"This donation is a tangible recognition of the importance of the performing arts to a healthy civil society. We are delighted that this gift allows us to demonstrate these important objectives at Dalhousie University." - Rob Summerby-Murray, Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
